Each occasion demands its own specific dressing style. We can never wear a formal suit to a wedding party. Neither can we wear an attractive evening gown to a funeral. The tradition of wearing the right dress in the right occasion probably started since the time human beings got civilized and learnt that clothing was more than their basic requirement.

Today, with the modernization of the outlook of the society all over the world, along with the increase in the style and fashion consciousness, men and women are more and more conscious about the intricate details of the clothes they wear in different occasions.

They are aware of the color they should choose on the basis of the occasion they are supposed to attend, the cut that might be perfect with their body structure, the fabric of the dress, the texture etc. in every minute details.

One such specific dress, which is one of the most important among all others, is the bridesmaid dress. Whenever there is an occasion that demands that we need to wear a bridesmaid dress, we get conscious thinking about the various aspects of it.

We keep on thinking about the style, the cut, the fabric, the texture and a lot of other such important factors. Some of us even emphasize on designer brands for bridesmaid dresses.

But, the most horrible is when being so fanatic and choosy we get hold of bridesmaid dresses that are either not proper as far as cut and finish is concerned, or the embellishment used appears to be out of date, the lining material is extremely cheap, the stitches are not strong enough or there are other defects that were not clearly visible at the time of the buy. Actually these are ready to wear ones which cannot fit us perfectly at all.

Even if you are victim of such a mess how can you avoid such problems? The best way to avoid such hassles and get a perfect bridesmaid dress is to make it yourself according your own body structure. But most of you who are reading this article might scream in panic, thinking how is it possible?

Is making a bridesmaid wear all by ourselves so easy? Yes, it is exactly an easy job, if you know the right techniques and the things to consider while making one for yourself.

Make a design idea of your choice

First of all, while trying to make a bridesmaid wear for yourself, what you need to do is to get an idea of the type of dress that will suit you perfectly. Also consider the climate and the gravity of the wedding you are supposed to be a bridesmaid at.

While conceiving an idea of the various designs on the bridesmaid wear, you can get hold of some fashion magazines featuring such dresses. In case you are net savvy then nothing like it. Sit in font of your computer and access the internet to download some of the styles that will be perfect for you.

While making the selection, never focus on a singe design, as, if that gets rejected due to certain technical reasons, you will have to start the whole process all over again. Download at least four to five designs that appeal to you. During the selection process, you must be very careful to take a note of the embellishments, color, fabric texture and cut as well.

Make the paper pattern

Next important step is to make paper pattern of one of the styles that have finalized. A paper pattern will be such that it will show the exact measurements everywhere, your waist size, bust, length, shoulder to shoulder distance everything.

It will also show the various parts at which the final fabric is to be cut so that you get your desired fit, drape and fall. If you think you are not so expert in the matter, you can contact a professional pattern master to do the same for you.

Make a trial gown

After the paper pattern of your dress has been made, trace the pattern on a trail cloth, preferably muslin. It might not be as crisp and smooth as the final fabric you have selected for your dress, but it will give you an idea of how correct the pattern has been made or if there is any alteration that is necessary.

While plotting the dress from the paper pattern to the fabric, you must keep in mind that the areas where it is to be stitched must be given an allowance of one inch more from the pattern. Mark the stitch line with a ‘pressing wheel’ so that the fabric could be stitched following that line.

Stitch the garment yourself or from a professional stitching expert and give a trial. In case you see any problem in the fit or drape, analyze if it is due to mistake in stitch or the pattern. Correct the mistakes at this stage.

Make a final plotting on the fabric

Only when you find that the trial gown is perfectly fitting your silhouette, go for the final plotting on the final fabric. In case if you are not confident enough to plot yourself, it is always better to have it done by a professional.

Now, while plotting the dress pattern, other than the seam allowance at the sides, sleeves, etc. concentrate on the neckline and the back line. These are the areas where paper pasting is to be put so that the finishing of the garment is perfect and it perfectly sits against your body.

In the process do not forget the lining of your bridesmaid dress that it extremely crucial in order to give you the right fall. So, while plotting the dress, give allowances for the lining fabric to fit in, too.

Make your final bridesmaid dress

The last part of the process is to cut the fabric as per the pattern and stitch it. You can do it yourself too or appoint a professional to do it for you. While sewing the dress, keep in mind that the raw edge of the seams must remain in between the fabric and lining and not face towards your body.

Again, lock the raw edges with a fine, double stitch. Put plastic bones inside the side, front and back seams of the upper part of the dress. Stitch a foam breast cap at the areas of your bosom. They should be stitched from the inside direction of the lining and must not show from the back of your dress.
