Nails portray the overall hygiene of a person. Well maintained and healthy nails go a long way to speak volumes about someone’s personality and personal habits. If adequate care is not taken nails become yellow, chipped and loses its shape gradually.
Further use of harsh chemicals, improper lifestyle and daily household activities leads to deterioration of the health of the nails. Shiny and healthy nails can be easily maintained following some steps habitually.
Manicure and pedicure is extremely necessary to keep the nails looking good and making them clean. They not only remove dead cells but also make the nails soft.
Nobody likes to have dry and rough nails. Petroleum jelly or olive oil can be rubbed in the cuticles every night before going to bed. This will make the cuticles and nails soft and smooth.
Nails should not be subjected to any kind of harsh activities like pricking or poking at some stuff. Additionally biting nails should be strictly avoided as it leads to growth of bacteria and fungal infections.
It has to be kept in mind that although long nails look very stylish, they can also get easily broken and chipped. Therefore nails have to be cut to a short or medium length and regularly filed to remove any broken or chipped nail which may become the resting ground for fungus and bacteria.
A clear, transparent nail polish can be applied on the nails which will act as a preventive cover to shield the nails from harsh chemicals. However it has to be kept in mind that nail polish has to be removed every week and then again re- applied after a thorough cleansing regime of pedicure and manicure.
Another preventive measure to save the nails from daily household activities is to wear rubber gloves while washing, cleaning and doing other chores in home, especially in the kitchen.
Nail polish removers containing formaldehyde or acetone have to be discarded as they are very harmful for nails. Nail polish should also not be over applied as a single coat is enough to make the nails look shiny and vibrant.
Finally food plays an important role in maintaining healthy nails. Milk, garlic, salmon, brown rice, eggs, soy, nuts, etc. have to be included in daily diet. Plenty of water also has to be taken to keep the body hydrated.
