A transdermal patch is good only for medications having small molecules because the skin is a strong barrier and large medicine molecules will not penetrate easily into the skin. Some pharmaceuticals like nitroglycerin are combined with alcohol such that the ability to penetrate medicine in the skin increases with a transdermal patch. These patches are safe as many medicines given only by injections, now has an alternative.

You can protect your skin during certain instances when transdermal patch is applied containing aluminum foil or other metallic components. Sometimes these may cause burning during MRI procedure.

It may cause itching on skin resulting in rashes on sensitive skin. It is due to the conventional pulse sequences. Sometimes small injuries also occur when the transdermal patch receives high temperature during MRI procedure. Though, this itching can be dealt with ointments prescribed by medical expert after skin analysis.

Anecdotal reports point out that transdermal patches having aluminum foil or a metallic component can bring on excessive heating or burn. That is why it’s recommended that the medication patch should be removed temporarily, in order to avoid skin problems.

If there are skin burns or injuries, then after the MRI or any medical procedure the patch can be removed and a new patch can be worn by the patient. But all these processes have to be done under the guidance of a physician or a skin specialist. You should wear a particular patch only for prescribed hours or days because it won’t be of much use after the effect of medicine is over. Many medicines are available in the form of transdermal patch.
